Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most effective surgical procedures performed by ophthalmologist today. In cataract surgery, the lens inside the eye that has become cloudy is removed and replaced with an artificial lens to restore clear vision. The artificial lens is called intraocular lens or IOL.

Cataract can be removed by

  1. Phacoemulsification
    Most cataracts are removed by Phacoemulsification which is also called small incision cataract surgery. U/S handpiece is used to remove the cataract and later lens is replaces

In contrast to traditional cataract surgery which uses scalpel, laser cataract uses laser to make the cut. It involves three steps-

  • The corneal incision- Precise incision is made using laser
  • The anterior capsulotomy – The eye’s natural lens is surrounded by a very thin, clear capsule. In cataract surgery, the front portion of the capsule is removed in a step called an anterior capsulotomy to gain access to the cataract.
  • Lens and cataract fragmentation – The Laser softens the cataract and breaks it into pieces

After the cataract removal, IOL / Intraocular lens will be implanted
